An overview

What is TECS?

Technology Enabled Care Services — the connected technologies that help people live more safely and independently.

The bigger picture

One term for connected care

Technology Enabled Care Services (TECS) is fast becoming the accepted description for a range of health and care technologies such as Telecare, Telehealth, Environmental Controls, mHealth and Telemedicine. Developing a generic term ensures each person can benefit from the right technology for their needs at a particular time, rather than being restricted by services or funding streams that are not person-centred.

It remains important, though, for professional prescribers, patients, service users and carers to understand the different terms that make up TECS — set out below.

The building blocks

The technologies that make up TECS

Telecare

Sensors and 24/7 monitoring that keep people safe and independent at home.

Telehealth

Remote monitoring of vital signs to help manage long-term conditions.

Environmental Controls

Assistive technology that helps people with disabilities control their surroundings.

mHealth

Health support delivered through smartphones, apps and mobile connectivity.

Telemedicine

Video and data links that let clinicians diagnose and advise remotely.
